Sikkim Flash Floods Update: 14 Lives Lost, 104 Missing; Massive Rescue Operation in Progress

The serene landscapes of North Sikkim were marred by tragedy as Sikkim flash floods, triggered by a lake outburst, wreaked havoc, leaving at least 14 lives lost and 104 individuals missing. The catastrophe unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday, October 4, when a glacial lake, perched at an altitude of 17,000 feet, burst due to incessant rains.

Rescue operations, spearheaded by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), have been in full swing since the disaster struck. Over 2,011 people have been successfully rescued as of now, with efforts to locate and save the missing individuals still ongoing.

The situation took a somber turn with the news that among the missing were 22 brave Army soldiers. However, there was a glimmer of hope when one of them was successfully rescued on Wednesday night, bolstering the resolve of the rescue teams.

The impact of the flash floods has been widespread, affecting more than 20,000 people and leaving over 3,000 tourists stranded in various parts of the state. In a harrowing turn of events, about 12-14 workers, who were employed at the Teesta Stage 3 dam in Chungthang, remain trapped in the tunnels of the dam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demonstrating a swift response to the crisis, took stock of the situation on Wednesday night and has pledged unwavering support to the Chief Minister in dealing with this natural calamity.

The flash floods were a result of a glacial lake burst, which sent torrents of water downstream into the Teesta River, causing severe flooding across four districts, including Mangan, Gangtok, Pakyong, and Namchi. Notably, the Central Water Commission (CWC) hinted at the possibility that the lake burst might have been triggered by the earthquake in Nepal that occurred on Tuesday, although no further details were provided.

As the nation unites in solidarity with the affected people of Sikkim, rescue operations continue to be the top priority. Authorities are working tirelessly to locate the missing individuals and ensure the safety of those still at risk. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation as the nation comes together to support the people of Sikkim during these challenging times.
